Continuous welding of e.g. a steel tube along its length involves displacing parallel to its axis a non-closed circular section tube and introducing the tube into a welder having radially movable gripping means, the welding device and one of the gripping elements being displaced simultaneously as a function of the weld edges sepn. The edges of the tube to be welded are maintained at a constant sepn. during passage of the tube through the welding device.
