Particle concn. of an aerosol is continuously monitored by passing the aerosol as a stream through an electrostatic precipitator, which is operated intermittently to remove particles from the stream. The resultant aerosol stream is fed to a detector to produce a fluctuating output signal which is amplified to provide a signal related to the particle concn. of the aerosol. The system can be used to measure sulphur concn. in air, in which case a flame photometer, detector is employed. Sulphir levels of from 1-50 ug/m3 can be measured.
