<p>A fireproof construction unit consists of a hollow body filled with a soln. of is not 1 alkali silicate. The unit is esp. an interior window. When the glass breaks under the action of heat or a flame, pref. at a pre-determined breaking point, the alkali silicate leaks through the break and foams, preventing further leakage and sealing the break. The hollow body is esp. constructed of glass or a clear transparent synthetic material, but for certain purposes opaque materials, e.g. synthetic or metal sheets, may be used. In the silicate, the ratio of Me2O:SiO2 is 1:2.8-3.5. The soln. has a solids content of 32-38 wt%, and may contain is not >8 wt.% of a cpd. which increases the viscosity, e.g. an alkali phosphate, pref. K tripolyphosphate or diammonium phosphate, or urea. A cpd. which is compatable with waterglass, e.g. sugar, may also be incorporated.</p> |
