Pressure roller e.g. for papermaking, dyeing or wringing-out machines (as used in the textile industry) comprises a rigid roller core surrounded by an elastomeric (e.g. rubber or rubber-plastics) mantle, the latter being fitted with circumferential grooves that are either helical or coplanar with the dia. of the roller. The cross-section of the grooves is considerably narrower away from their bottom or valley than at the bottom which is suitably twice as wide as the top. Thus, the cross section of the grooves may be likened to the shape of a bottle with relatively narrow neck and spherically bulbous body.
