A narrow-section radial tyre has an annular tread, two sidewalls from tread to beads, bead wires, internal reinforcement carcass and rubber layer between beads with radial cord filaments, and a girdle beneath the tread and round the carcass; the ratio of the height from the foot of the bead to the top of the carcass section to the max. carcass width is is not >0.8. When the tyre is mounted on the rim and inflated, the profile of the carcass is convez outwards and concave inwards, the convex section extends from a specific point and in the plane which passes through the rim where that is at right angles to the axis of rotation near the bead, along the sidewall and to the tread; this convexity is maintained in equilibrium so that it only balances the inflation pressure, the girdle, and the reaction to the inflation pressure; the concave section extends from near the same point to the bead wire area, it is held by the rim and blends continuously into the convex section. The force carried by the girdle is utilised to produce an equilibrium profile of the carcass, and reduced shear stresses in service.
|
