1494128 Variable speed gear I PAPADIMITRIOU 17 Jan 1975 [6 April 1974] 2124/75 Heading F2D [Also in Division B7] A two-way drive system, for a vehicle driven by an input flywheel 21, includes a variableratio gear 20 having a torque-splitting planet train with planets 27, carried by an output shaft 2, meshing an input sun 6 and a ring gear 8 driven by the input shaft 1 through an expanding wheel belt gear 13, 14, countershaft 11, overload slip coupling 11a, and freely mounted wheel 9 meshing external teeth on the ring gear 8, the gear housing 30 being mounted to turn about the axis of the shafts 1, 2 in a yielding elastic block 34, under torque reaction which is transmitted through double-acting master and slave cylinders 5, 4 to a manual control lever 3 of the expanding wheel gear, whereby the operator receives the feel of the torque reaction which tends to bring the control lever towards zero drive position under excessive accelerating or decelerating forward drive load. During forward drive the flywheel 21 provides energy for acceleration, and on overrunbraking for charging a battery 24 supplying current to a propulsion motor 22 on the input shaft 1, excess energy being dissipated in a resistor 28. For sustained high-speed running an I.C. engine 29, preferably rotary, can be electromagnetically clutched at 30 to the input shaft 1. The battery 24 can also be charged from a mains supply 26. |
