HALOGENATED DERIVATIVES OF 1,3-DIOXOLANE HAVING MUCOLYTIC ACTIVITY

Halogenated derivatives of 1,3-dioxolane having the general formula: (I) wherein Rx is a linear or branched chain alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and bearing at least one bromine or iodine atom as a substituent, are obtained by condensing an acetal of the general formula: (II) wherein Rx has the afore said meaning and R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, with 1-benzylglycerol in the presence of sulphosalicylic acid and catalytically hydrogenating the condensation product obtained. The compounds of formula (I) are useful as expectorants and fluidizers of tracheobronchial mucus.
