Fluorene and phenanthrene derivs. of formula (I), their optical antipodes, diastereoisomers and physiologically acceptable salts when B contains COOH are new. In (I) R1 is H, halo, OH (opt. substd. by lower alkanoyl), lower alkyl or alkoxy, R2 and R3 = H, phenyl or lower alkyl. n = 0, 1 or 2. A is carbonyl, CH2OH (opt. substd. on the O by lower alkyl or alkanoyl), or opt. unsatd. linear 1-2C alkylene opt. substd. by 1 or 2 lower alkyl. B is 3-7C hydroxycycloalkyl or -DR4. D is linear 1-5C alkylene opt. substd. by 1 or 2 lower alkyl and/or OH. R4 is H, CH2OH (opt. substd. as CHOH above), OH, CH=NOH, HCO, CN, COOH, carbophenoxy or carbobenzyloxy, CH3 substd. by 2 lower alkoxy, carbalkoxy, carboxycycloalkoxy or carbalkenyloxy opt. substd. by lower alkoxy (here alkyl portions have 1-6C, cycloalkyl 3-6C and alkenyl 2-6C), CONR5R6 or the gp. -CON(Cy)-CONHCY. Cy is cyclohexyl. R5 and R6 are H or lower alkyl (opt. substd. by lower alkoxy), or together they complete pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino, thiomorpholino, 1-oxidothiomorpholine or 1,1-dioxidothiomorpholino). (I) reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels and are given in conventional formulations ar 10-300, esp. 15-90 mg. per day. The cpd. 1-(2-fluorenyl)ethylmercapto acetamide has oral LD50 in mice >6 g/kg.
