(N)-2-Mercapto:ethyl-alkanamide(s) prepn. from oxazoline(s) - and hydrogen sulphide under anhydrous conditions, with opt. hydrolysis of prod. to mercapto-ethylamine(s)

Prepn. of N-(2-mercaptoethyl)alkanamides (I) comprises reaction under anhydrous conditions of H2S with a 2-H-2-oxazoline or 2-alkyl-2-oxazoline of formula (II) (where R is H or alkyl; R1-4 are each H, lower alkyl, hydroxy-lower alkyl or phenyl). Pref. molar ratio H2S: (II) is is not 1. Reaction may be in absence of solvent, or in soln. in 1-4C alkanol, esp. MeOH. Process is pref. at 20-200, esp. 50-150 degrees C. Autogenous or superatmos. pressure may be used. Process gives high yields of (I). The (III) HCl salts obtd. are useful in prodn. of pharmaceuticals, or, after neutralisation, as a curing agent in epoxy resins or as an acid scavenger to inhibit corrosion.
