<p>Aq. hardener soln. for proteinaceous material, esp. photographic gelatin emulsion, contain (a) a water soluble salt of 2,4-dichloro-6-hydroxy-1,3,5-triazine (I) (b) 0.02-0.2 moles (per mole (I) of an alkali metal borate such as xMo2.yB2O3.zH2O where M is Na, K or NH4, z is 0 or whole number and x and y are 1 or 2, and opt. (c) an inert water-soluble solvent such as acetone or dioxan. The (I) can be made in practically quantitative yield from cyanuric chloride (II) in aq. medium, so that expensive solvent recovery is not required. The amt. of alkali metal borate required is considerably less than in DT 2820108, so that waste water from the hardening process is less polluted. The hardener solns. have improved stability compared with prior art materials of this type, and partic. do not form CO2 due to hydrolysis, so that problems of bubble formation during use and the danger of pressure build up in containers during storage are eliminated. The solns. are esp. useful for hardening photographic gelatin layers. No fogging or loss of sensitivity occurs and the abrasion resistance of the hardened material is increased considerably.</p> |
