The device is for drawing off the bottom sheet of a stack of sheets. The stack which is supported at the bottom and supplied with new sheets from above is guided on at least one side. Take off mechanisms engage periodically on the bottom sheet. The support members (3, 11) support the sheets (10) in a position inclined to the horizontal so that their bottom edges (24) press against the side guide (1). This guide is corrugated so that it has braking faces (28), which brake the downwards motion of the stack by friction of these edges. The angle of inclination (2) of the sheets (10) to the horizontal is in the range 20 deg. to 60 deg.
