<p>Prepn. of DELTA 5(10),7-unsatd. steroids (I) is carried out by electrolysing a soln. of the corresp. DELTA 5(10),6,8-unsatd. steroid (II) in a 1-3C amine or liq. NH3 in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a strong or weak acid as supporting electrolyte. Electrolysis is performed in a 1- or 2- compartment cell at a current density of 0.01-1 (pref. 0.01-0.5) A/cm2. Suitable cpds. (II) are DELTA 5(10),6,8-unsatd. derivs. of oestrane, 18-methyloestrane, 19-norpregnane, 19 norcholestane and their D-homo analogues. They can contain other double bonds and/or reducible gps. (e.g. CO, NO2 or imino). (I) are useful as pharmaceutical intermediates e.g. 3-methoxy-1,5(10),7-ostratrien-17 beta-ol (Ia) can be converted to equilin.</p> |
