Process for preparing methoxyacetic acid, in which 2-methoxyethanol is oxidised by konc. HNO3 with/or without the aid of a vanadium catalyst in one operation (1 step) to give the desired product. This takes place at 40 to 90 DEG C during a reaction time of 3 to 4 hours.
