Process for rapid carbonisation and/or partial gasification of coal is claimed. Improvement is that the coke dust and/or coke fines produced in the process are cooled to recover their sensible heat (pref. by heat exchange with materials used in the process) and, opt. after further processing, are used as (a) a lean additive for the mfr. of lump coke by chamber coking of less suitable coals, e.g. gas coal; (b) a reducing agent in chemical and metallurgical processes, e.g. ore smelting, pig-iron prodn, etc., and (c) an active carbon, e.g. for absorbing noxious gases. |
