Thiocarbamates are prepared by a process comprising reacting an aqueous solution of a thiocarbamate salt with an organic halide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a quaternary ammonium salt having the formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="9" wi="38" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>in which R<Sup>4</Sup> and R<Sup>5</Sup> are independently selected from the group consisting of C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>25</Sub> alkyl and C<Sub>2</Sub>-C<Sub>25</Sub> alkenyl, R<Sup>6</Sup> and R<Sup>7</Sup> are independently selected from the group consisting of C<Sub>6</Sub>-C<Sub>25</Sub> alkyl and C<Sub>6</Sub>-C<Sub>25</Sub> alkenyl, and Y- is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride and bromide; and separating the thiocarbamate from the aqueous solution.
