A chuck for centring and clamping a workpiece in a machine tool 20 comprises a hydraulic system for actuation of tensioning members 16,25 for automatically achieving the said centring and clamping. A number of first tensioning members 16 are acted upon by a first pressure level for a first limited time span for centring of the workpiece, before a higher pressure level is allowed to act upon remaining tensioning members 25 for clamping of the workpiece. The chuck enables even previously unworked workpieces to be rapidly and effectively centred and clamped and possibly to be subsequently worked to narrow tolerances. <IMAGE> |
