A cableway carriage has a body by means of which the carriage can be suspended from and for movement along a support cable. A drop arm depends from the body and carries a rotatable member with a surface which can be operatively engaged with a haul-in line whereby the member is rotated by pulling on the haulin line. The haul-in line is wound around the rotatable member and serves to hold a load suspended from the carriage. A brake is positioned for braking the rotation of the member, and a mechanism carried by the drop arm is operatively connected to the brake whereby the member is braked in response to a tension above a predetermined value being applied to the haul-in line. The mechanism includes a pivotable arm which forms part of the carriage and is connected to an operating linkage of a brake band wound around a brake drum connected for rotation in unison with the rotatable member in such a way that tension above a predetermined value on the haul-in line pivots the arm to tighten the brake band onto the brake drum.
