The electrolytic cell has anode and cathode compartments divided by a separator and an O2 compartment divided from the cathode compartment by an O2 electrode. The cell is operated by (a) feeding alkali metal halide soln., to the anode compartment and aq. soln. to the cathode compartment, (b) feeding molecular O2-contg. fluid to the O2 compartment at a positive gauge press. with total flow rate > theoretical stoichiometric amt. O2 needed for reaction, (c) applying potential between anode and cathode, (d) removing halogen gas and alkali metal hydroxide from anode and cathode compartments respectively and (e) removing O2-depleted fluid from the O2 compartment while maintaining positive gauge press. within the compartment. Pref., or alternatively, the fluid of (b) is O2-contg., CO2-depleted gas of high humidity. Energy efficiency is increased, with operating voltage reduced up to 30% compared with cell evolving H2. OC2-free humidified gas increases efficiency and lengthens cathode life. |
