PURPOSE:To suppress the formation of by-products, and to increase the selectivity of monoethylene glycol in the preparation of ethylene glycol from ethylene oxide and water, by using Mo metal and/or a Mo compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene glycol is obtained by reacting ethylene oxide with water in the presence of Mo metal and/or a Mo compound (e.g. MoO3, MoS2, etc.). On this occasion, ethylene oxide is converted into ethylene glycol completely, and monoethylene glycol is mainly formed with little by-production of diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, etc. Amount of the catalyst is more than 0.01 wt.%, preferably 0.2-5 wt.%, based on the mixture of ethylene oxide and water. |
