PURPOSE:To obtain linalool useful as perfume and a raw material of vitamins, selectively, by reducing easily-available 0-linalyl-N,N-dimethylhydroxyamine with hydrogen in the presence of a specific multi-component reduction catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Linalool is obtained by reducing a compound of formula (Me is methyl; 1-10 are position number of carbon) under a hydrogen pressure of <= 30 kg/cm<2>, in the presence of a catalyst obtained by adding at least one kind of element selected from a group comprising Al, Ge, As, Sb, S, Se and Cr to Ni or Co. The atomic ratio of Al, Ge, etc. to Ni or Co is preferably 0.01-20. The compound of formula is economically obtainable by the reaction of nerylamine, which is obtained by the telomerization of isoprene and dimethylamine, with H2O2, followed by the thermal rearrangement. |
