Embossing fibrous sheet for making cigarette filter tips - produces wide range of sheet textures, by adjusting continuous machine

Process and appts. for impressing a fibrous sheet to a profile of crests and indentations is claimed. This is preparatory to rolling the sheet into a cylindrical stick to be cut into filter tips for cigarettes. During the impressing operation the machine setting is adjustable to vary the heights of the crests of the profile. This adjustment simultaneously alters the degree of lateral stretch of the sheet as well as its texture. The adjustment is infinitely variable within a range which at one extreme gives a sheet texture which is cleanly embossed, corrugated etc., and at the other extreme gives a texture of crinkles and creases through out the length of the sheet. The impressing machine pref. employs a pair of rolls on parallel axes. Each roll has a surface profile of coaxial, annular grooves and crests and the crests of each roller engage to an adjustable depth in the grooves of the other roller. This adjustment is pref. achieved by having a fixed axis roll opposed to a roll on an adjustable axis. Used for producing filter material for cigarette filter tips. A single machine can be used to produce a wide range of textures of filter sheet. Adjustment within the range is infinitely variable and can be effected during continuous operation of the machine.
