In one method of making the bag Fig. 1, a paper web 21 and foam web 20 are united by sprayed-on adhesive 25 or ribbons of adhesive at their edges as they pass between rollers 23, 24. The laminate so formed is folded and sealed transversely, e.g. by heated rollers, at spaced intervals, cuts then being made through the seals 31 to form individual bags. The web 21 may be wider than the web 20 to form a flap at one or both sides of the bag mouth or, as shown, the webs are of equal width but folded non-centrally to form a cushioned flap 35<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3B. A strip of adhesive 27, Fig. 1, may be applied to one bag wall and covered by a peelable backing 29 for use in closing the flap 35<SP>1</SP>. Alternatively the bag mouth is closed by heat-sealing, stapling, or gluing. The sealed edges 31 may be folded back and adhered to the adjacent bag wall. A strip of hot melt adhesive may be applied to the webs before folding in the areas where the seals 31 are to be made. The foam layer may be stretched before laminating to assist in holding open the mouth of the completed bag. The edges of the web 21 may be folded back to stiffen the bag mouth. In a second method Fig. 6, the bag is formed from two foam webs 40, 41 and two paper webs 43, 44 heat sealed at one edge and then transversely prior to severing. |
