PURPOSE:An active carbon having weak acidic cation-exchanging group with a specific ion-exchange capability is specifically produced from acrylonitrile polymer. Such active carbon is bound with Cu or Ag by cation exchange, minimizing surface area reduction and rendering it disinfectant. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile base polymer is activated by steam or chemicals to be converted into an active carbon having a weak acidic cation-exchange group of 0.2 to 3 miliequivalent/g. The so formed active carbon is immersed in a 0.05 to 0.2N aqueous solution containing Cu<2+> or Ag<+> and the solution is made to a pH 5 to 6 by adding NH3 aqueous solution, causing the metal ions to bind with mainly COOH groups. This process provides the active carbon with a germicide property without losing the adsorbing capability. As such, the product is useful for disinfection and cleaning of third treatment water, disinfection of breeding water bath, deodorant and disinfection of shoes mat, air filter for germless room, mask, mat, fruit packaging material, etc. |
