A wide web (W) of carded fibres is fed to a collecting element (10) in the region of the doffer (100). The gathered web is fed at the outlet of the collecting element to a first pair of drawing rollers (12, 12a). A calibrating funnel (19) is fitted snugly between this pair and a second pair of drawing rollers (21, 22). After the calibrating funnel, the band compressed in the latter passes into the groove (23) at the second pair of drawing rollers (21, 22) serving at the same time as measuring rollers. The measured values determined serve directly for controlling the speed of the combined pair of drawing and measuring rollers (21, 22). The compact form of construction makes it possible, despite the design with a closed control circuit, to draw in the band automatically after the web (W) has been introduced into the collecting element (10). <IMAGE>
