High purity ε-caprolactam with alky, values in the range required for polymn. was recovered from Beckmann rearrangement reaction mixts. by extg. the partially neutralized H2SO4 soln. with a water-immiscible solvent, extg. this soln. with water, reextg. ε-caprolactam from the water ext. with a water-immiscible solvent, evapg., and vacuum distg. the residue. In a typical example, CHCl3 was used as a solvent.
