The keelless sailing or motor yacht has a conventionally shaped hull. A flat double bottom plate inside this (6) seals off a ballast compartment (6) with a flood valve (7) with inboard handle (8), a valved vent (9, 10) and a stand-pipe (11) for pumping out. The double bottom extends the ull length and width of the hull but may be cut away centrally, and an annular tank formed, to provide additional space (13) for machinery and/or equipment. The tank should be sized to hold a weight of water exceeding that of the craft, e.g. by more that 50%.
