The winch attachment for the car has a mounting plate (16) which is bolted to the drive wheel of the vehicle and a drum (9) on which is wound the winch cable. Flanged sides (4) of the drum allow the cable to be reeled in at an angle to the car. The drum can be linked to the plate by a reduction gearing (10) for improved winch effort. The plate is fitted to the wheel disc by bayonet or similar rapid fittings and enables a driver to retrieve his vehicle without a tow truck.
