Improvements in knitted stockings and mechanism and process for making the same

Convention date, Sept. 8, 1932. [Class 74 (ii).] The heel of a seamless stocking is knitted as a segment 110 joined to the sole on each side by a suture line R along which the stitches are slackened. The segment is narrowed only, each course or a smaller number being fashioned. In the latter case either the narrowing or the widening pickers are operated intermittently. The invention is described as applied to the Scott and Williams type of revolving needle cylinder hosiery machine. At one side of the stocking needles are picked out of action for two reciprocations and are missed by the picker after the third course in reverse direction. The complemental cycle of operations is carried out on the other side. When the narrowing pickers are tied together by a lostmotion link, the periodical interruption of the narrowing operation can be effected by lifting one of the pickers at the necessary intervals. Lugs on the side of the main pattern chain act, by intermediate connections, on a finger 32 overlying the rear end of a pivoted idling catch 33, which underlies, at the front end, one of the narrowing pickers. When the catch 33 is tipped by the action of the pattern chain the picker is raised out of action. After the segment 110 has been narrowed to the desired point a course is put in to form the suture line R. To avoid puckering, the stitches are slackened for a number of courses along the suture by a cam 38 Fig. 8 acting to push in certain sinkers. By varying the rate of narrowing the line R may be made to assume various curvatures. When the heel to be formed by intermittent use of the widening picker, side lugs on the pattern chain normally hold the picker in place. The absence of these lugs at any particular point allows the picker to be operated. When the heel and the toe are to be made on the short and long butt side respectively of the circle of needles, as described in Specification 355,062, the lips 681 of the widening picker are made wide enough for two long-butted needles while notches 682 reduce this width by one half.
