METHOD OF UNIFORMLY COMPRESSING AN ARTICLE IN A DIE AND SUPPORT RIAL USED THEREFOR

A method of uniformly compressing an article in a die as disclosed which includes forming a supporting material of a mixture including a low friction powder and a decomposable binder, arranging the supporting material fully within the die with the article enveloped therein, heating the die to decompose the binder and to leave a compressible pressure-transmitting medium of uniformly controlled density encasingly about the article, and applying pressure through the die to compress the medium and to thereby uniformly densify the article to the desired shape. The supporting material perferably consists essentially of at least 30% by total volume of the decomposable binder for improved handling and densifying properties.
