<p>The activity of a mass of activated sludge into which a stream of sewage flows is measured, in a process in which the oxygen consumed is supplied pref. electrolytically; the amount delivered being measured and recorded. In a closed system, when the concn. of oxygen falls below a certain level, the delivery of oxygen is commenced, and the oxygen delivered is fed into a stream of air passing through the activated sludge. The oxygen concn. of the activated sludge is determined by means of the oxygen concn. in the stream of air passing through; the amt. of oxygen delivered being the same for each unit of time. Process provides rapid, accurate and continuously carried out measurement of the oxygen requirement, and can be used for the control of a sewage purification plant. The measuring process has the advantage that the intrinsic activity of the sludge is excluded.</p> |
