The shaft seal is partic. for fluids, having one or more sleeves secured in a housing and with axial elastic ribs forming sealing edges. The pressure of these edges is reduced. Each rib (6) has a collar (8) extending radially outwards from near the edge (7) and forming a seal where it bears against the housing. A sealing lip (9) slides against the housing and can have a bellows form. Between the rib and housing (2) a chamber can be formed (13), connected to a drilling (14, 18) leading to the outside of the housing.
