The storage tank for oil or other bulk liquid, particularly for a marine tanker, has a flexible membrane attached to its interior so that it can be filled with either oil or sea water ballast. The membrane then ensures that the two liquids never come into contact with each other. The interior of the tank is designed so that inlet or outlet holes cannot be blocked by the membrane itself, particularly when slack. Protective plates are mounted over the corners and triangular gusset plates can be mounted at suitable points along corners to form pockets between them to protect the outlet and inlet holes. The plates are perforated, or alternatively mesh grids are used instead of plates.
