The vacuum closing machine for fitting lids onto containers (7) which have been supplied with a loose lid (8) has a degassing position with a plate (13) which is lifted upwards by a cylinder (9) towards a sealing hood (19). Inside the vacuum chamber under the hood (14) is a piston which moves a block with a magnet in the centre downwards to centre the lid, and secure it initially in the presence of a protective gas. The block operates inside a ring shaped member to act as a reducing device. At the next stage, the top of the container with the lid in position is forced against the sloping interior (37) of another hood (36) so as the crimp inwards the edge of the container onto the lid. The stroke for the operating piston can be varied.
