The security markings for the license plate comprise a relief pattern over the characters in a set code which identifies the vehicle type and age etc. The code is read by special sensors. Additional code information can be provided by patterns of holes in the plate edge. The plate only has the relief in the spaces between the characters so that any attempt to alter the plate is easily identified.
