The smoke release hatch has a base with hinge on which the hatch pivots under the action of an actuator when released by a detector. The detector (18) is mechanically coupled to a compression spring (15) which, in conjunction with a torsion spring, opens the hatch far enough (16) to allow the actuator to swing it right open, this actuator functioning in a direction parallel to the hatch when shut. Coupling between detector and compression spring can be by a block (13) fixed to the base, with an aperture for an anchor pin (14). An opening in the body accommodates a release pin engaging in a recess in the anchor pin. The compression spring fits between block and hatch and round the anchor pin.
