Process for the prepn. of N-alkylamino-benzophenone of formula (I) by reaction of an amino-benzophenone (II) with an alkylating agent, in the presence of a base, a quat. ammonium cpd. as catalyst and in an organic solvent. R is opt. branched, 1-5C alkyl and the two X groups independently-H or halo. Used as intermediates for medicaments, such as 2-benzoyl-4-chloro-glycinanilides (French application 77-18511) and diazepam. Process gives selective and quantitative alkylation in a single reaction stage to yield pure prods. Known processes have numerous stage, are non-selective (giving dialkyl cpds.) and give poor yields of purified (I). |
