Plating process comprises treating a workpiece having a nickel base finish (>=85% Ni) in a bath contg. a buffer and a plating source of >=1 gold compounds to provide a nickel-gold alloy layer of mol ratio 1:1 to 6:1, the nickel being provided by the nickel-base finish. The gold base finish exhibits the physical characteristics of pure gold plating except for resistance to salt spray and nitric acid and has high corrosion and anti-abrasion qualities. If pure nickel is used as the base finish, a high temp. stable (>=450 degrees C) gold alloy is provided but is phosphorus is present in the Ni layer, the gold alloy deteriorates at >300 degrees C. The gold base finish is uniform, strongly adherent to the base and at least 15 mu ins. thick.
|
