The diamond (10) is coated, with its collet (culet) (20) turned upwards, with a resin mass (41). A layer (42) of chromium is formed on the surface of the collet (culet) (20). A photosensitive resist film (43) is formed on the layer (42) and the image of the motif corresponding to the desired inscription is projected onto the film (43) so as to expose the film. The film (43) is developed, removing the non-cured parts of the photosensitive resist, and then, by means of chemical etching, the parts of the chromium layer (42) thus revealed are removed. Finally, the remainder of the photosensitive resist (43) is taken off and the diamond is realeased from the resin mass (41). The remaining parts of the chromium layer (42) form an inscription which adheres strongly onto the surface of the collet (culet) (20) of the diamond (10) and makes it possible to identify the latter. <IMAGE>
