It is made up of a polymer in which the spatial arrangements of the molecules vary over the length of the filaments to form alternate points of maximum and minimum densities which are repeated with a spacing of not more than 10 m. To manufacture it, the multifilament yarn is treated at a temperature sufficient to plasticise the polymer and the yarn is thrown forward continuously against the end of a parcel of yarn already treated, while the pressure of the carrier fluid is varied at a frequency per second which is at least equal to 1/600 of the speed of the yarn in metres per minute. As the degree of absorption of the dye in a subsequent dyeing of the yarn varies with the yarn density, a spatial shade-on-shade dyeing effect is thus easily obtained. <IMAGE>
