The machine automatically loads round items onto pallets, depositing them flat on the latter in layers each comprising a number of items by means of a transfer mechanism with grip. The grip comprises a series of vertical centring pieces (19) and grip fingers (21) engaging under peripheral protrusions on the items so as to transfer them in successive layers. The centring pieces can be mounted under a frame fixed to the base of the lifting portion of the lifting portion of the transfer mechanism, and also guiding a horizontally reciprocating frame on which the fingers are mounted.
