The helical spring used for recoil action in large caliber automatic weapons is made from multi-stranded material. To reduce the friction between the coils of the spring and the guide spindle on which it is mounted, a plastics coating is applied to the strands. This coating is intended to reduce spring breakages. Only the inner strands of the material are coated with an elastomeric substance, and these coated strands are twisted around the non coated outer strands.
