To obtain uniform properties in a continuously cast strand, solidifying metal in the liquid core is stirred by a pair of travelling electromagnetic fields on at least one of the upper and lower sides of the melt, the directions of the fields being parallel but in opposite senses. Preferably, for each field produced on one said side of the melt, a matching field having the same direction and sense is produced opposite thereto on the other side. The fields may extend either transversely (as shown) or parallel to the direction of casting. The arrangements may be repeated along the strand. Alternate fields may be of greater strength. <IMAGE> |
