The pref. catalyst is Fe2O3, or Fe3O4; and 1-5 wt.% of Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 is pref. added to coal subsequently converted into coke used in a blast furnace to mfr. pig iron. The catalyst pref. has a grain size 0.06 mm, and is homogeneously distributed throughout the coke in order to achieve the optimum effect. Coke consumption can be reduced by >=20 kg per tonne of iron made.
