The electro-chemical machining plant has the electrode (5) raised or lowered by a drive (6) housed in the machine frame (1). The electrode is immersed in electrolyte supplied at pressure from the pump (10). The gap (7) between the electrode and workpiece (3) is relatively small and is affected by the pressure of the electrolyte. If the pressure is suddenly shut off the spring back of the electrode brings it into contact with the workpiece causing the short circuit. This danger is avoided by connecting the controls of the drive and valve (14) so that the electrode is withdrawn before the valve is closed.
