A substantially puncture- and bullet-proof tyre comprises an open-beaded cord-reinforced casing 1 enclosing an annular filler 2 of natural or synthetic rubber of hardness less than 25 Shore A, the filler being initially formed to inverted U-section which provides an inner peripheral recess and is of larger corss-sectional dimension 6, Fig. 3, than the cavity of the casing 1, so that when fitted within the casing it is deformed, say to the condition 7, Fig. 3, and serves to tension the casing from bead to bead. The tyre is mounted on a circumferentially split rim 4 incorporating a bead spacer 5 and the chamber defined by the filler recess and the rim may remain at atmospheric pressure or may house in inflatable tube as at 23, Fig. 5. The volume of the filler 2 may be 40-80% that of the casing cavity. The casing may be of the low profile type of greater axial width than radial height in cross-section, and the filler recess may be radially within the rim flange edge for greater protection of any inflatable tube therein. Fig. 5 shows a filler 22 which when fitted has its edges butted and sealed by a cord-reinforced band to define a closed annular chamber housing a tube 23. |
