Oxygen and/or oxygen contg. gas, esp. air, is supplied to effluent treatment units with longitudinal flow by blowers. Oxygen concn. in the unit is measured at several points, pref. continuously. The signals are processed and used to control the flow of oxygen and/or oxygen contg. gas. - Pressure in the header supplying gas to the feed connections is also monitored and the signals used to control the output of the blowers. Two blowers are provided, one with constant output and the other with controlled output. Oxygen concn. is detected by probes. These provide signals to a processor unit which controls the gas supply valves. The header pressure is sensed by a transducer whose signal is also processed and used to control the output of blower
