1516221 Guides comprising opposed roller-sets SCHLOEMANN-SIEMAG AG 15 Jan 1976 [29 Jan 1975] 1581/76 Heading B8A [Also in Division B3] Alternate rolls 6, 6, Fig. 6, of a train of pairs of opposed rolls for guiding a strand are offset alternately by one side or the other of the strand path so that the width (b) of the path is defined by the outermost extremities of the working portions of alternate rolls and is greater than a working portion length. Idler rolls may be mounted in gaps at the sides of the strand path where the rolls have been offset. The rolls can thus be shorter and therefore thinner so that the casting speed can be increased. The length of a roll working portion is equal to or greater than the maximum slab width minus the distance t between the axes of adjacent rolls. Rolls on opposite sides of the strand path are also laterally offset relative to one another. The guide rolls of some of the pairs are each carried in bearings 22, 23 mounted on a crossmember 17, Fig. 2, and these members on one side of the path may be individually mounted so as to be displaceable towards and away from the strand surface, but as shown and particularly in the upstream part of the guide train, a number of cross-members 17 are grouped and connected by two end pieces 16 which are so displaceable while lower cross-members 14 are connected by two fixed end pieces 13. A pillar 12 secured to each end piece 13 by way of a holder 11 guides a sleeve (15) attached to the corresponding end piece 16 and bears an hydraulic cylinder 18 whose piston-rod is secured to the holder 11 for adjusting the roll spacing which is maintained by spacers 19 between the holder 11 and sleeve (15). The rolls of the downstream part, Figs. 1, 4, 5 (not shown), are of larger diameter and withdrawn and straighten the strand. The cross-members are individually mounted. |
