The air cooled automotive engine has a cowl forcing circulation of air round the cylinders and cylinder heads and delivering it to the vehicle body for heating. Push rods to operate the valves are accommodated in passages through cylinder block and head and at the join between the latter is an annular chamber connected to the engine intake, collecting any escaping gases. The pushrod passage (23) passes through the join (P) at which point it communicates with the annular chamber, connecting the latter to the engine intake. A sealing joint (33) between the cylinder head (4) and block (3) encloses the chamber, and the passage runs inside it.
