Both leg and foot portions include complete courses of synthetic stretchable body yarn and a nonstretch yarn is knitted in plated relation with the body yarn to form the terry loops in the heel region and the sole area. An elastic yarn incorporated in spaced wales forms mock ribs in the leg extending to the heel area and also into the step are adjacent the heel. Partial courses of the elastic yarn are between the body yarn courses with terry loops, and give enhanced stretch to the heel for better fit. Lightweight dress socks have the cushion features of heavier athlete socks.
