The gearbox for a heavy vehicle has a gear changing system with a selector arm which can be swung about an axis formed by a shaft passing through it. This arm has teeth on its tip which can engage the grooves around a spindle parallel to the shaft. The box has nine forward gears and one reverse gear position, and the selector can be moved to several positions alongside the grooved spindle to give these gear changes. The grooved spindle is also moved between two end positions against the force of a spring at one end. The shaft has a hollow interior, holding a spring which pushes a ball at the end against a sleeve and two locating balls forming part of the positioning system.
